Rapid Response For Robson Commemoration

Every funeral has to be 'right' first time. Even more so when you are arranging the service of thanksgiving for a high-profile individual such as former England and Newcastle United football team manager Sir Bobby Robson.

Whether for prince or pauper, the secret always lies in being able to trust co-workers and suppliers to deliver their individual pieces of the jigsaw on time. So when Sue Tutill of Tutill Remembrance Items was first contacted by the Football Association about books of condolences, her first reaction was organise a selection of ten samples to be sent out for next day delivery.

"The funeral for Sir Bobby Robson had already been held privately, but in view of his contribution to English sport, and the esteem that he was held in by both the wider football world and within the North East, a service celebrating his life was planned for Durham cathedral on Monday the 21st September. Luckily a decision was made as to the type of condolences book they wanted on Friday the 11th September - but as any funeral director faced with a grieving family will know, it could easily have taken longer", recalls Sue Tutill.

"The FA representatives ultimately chose our embossed maroon leather offering, but there still remained the nagging fear that the quantity ordered might not be enough - because no-one knew just how many football fans would be present at the cathedral, or how many more might make a special journey to Durham to pay their respects."

Tutill Remembrance however use a ring bound system for additional flexibility, so it was decided to place the four books that arrived on the week Tuesday before the service in strategic locations around the cathedral. Additional names, messages and comments could then be accommodated by substituting blank pages from the sample books of condolences that the FA had already had delivered. These extra pages to be collated into as many sets of extra embossed maroon leather books as required.

Thanks to a rapid response from Tutill, the FA planning team could move on to other aspects of organising the service, secure in the knowledge that this small - but vital - part of Sir Bobby Robson's commemoration had been successfully addressed.
