Family fleet 

For the family funeral director, replacement of a funeral fleet raises a different set of issues to those normally considered by the larger enterprise. As well as depreciation, the smaller independent also needs satisfactory answers to questions over long-term support for what today are fast becoming quite sophisticated vehicles.

Concepts such as 'total cost of ownership' remain important, but take their place alongside concerns over day-to-day availability, and even a calculation as to the likely benefits to trade of choosing a particular choice of make or model. Because at this level, first costs on their own may not be reflecting the bigger picture. Especially when, like the father and son firm of Lillywhite Funeral Service located in Prestwich, Manchester, you are putting a lot of eggs into one basket by replacing three vehicles at one fell swoop.

Ultimately, Lilleywhite's choice fell on two Binz E220 based Mercedes-Benz limousines, and the same coachbuilder's E270-based hearse. John Lilleywhite explains the reasoning behind the decision in these terms: "As a family run business it's important that we get it right when making this kind of investment into the business. After looking at it closely we had no hesitation in going for the Binz built Mercedes because of the engineering backing that comes with the vehicles. The build quality and service has been excellent and we look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with Binz".
