TATRA TRUCKS UK FACTS Czech Republic, Koprivnice-based Tatra a.s. is a world-class vehicle manufacturer specialising in heavy on- and off-road trucks. The company's reputation has been built on a unique design of all-independent and all-wheel drive tubular backbone chassis, that will deliver its load from tarmac to tundra without the need for transhipment. Whilst new to the UK, the reliability and longevity of Tatra vehicles have been proven all over the world, under the most unforgiving of conditions including the Siberian oilfields, China, Africa and of course on the Paris-Dakar rally. British and Ireland sole agent's Tatra Trucks UK Ltd. of Pewsey, Wiltshire, will initially be concentrating on the 6 x 6 variant of the T 163 family. The bonneted Jamal line includes an up to 25 tonne payload tipper, with a chassis only version also available for specialist applications. A conventional cabover format Terrno model is also offered, for customers with longer on-road hauls where the Jamal's heavy-duty features such as spur-gear reduction axles are not as essential as a sleeper or crew cab option. Power comes courtesy of a Euro 4 certified turbocharged air-cooled V8 diesel engine, of 12 litres capacity and offering 440 BHP. Euro 4 compliance is achieved by electronic fuel injection and SCR catalyst with AdBlue urea injection. These engines are manufactured in house by Tatra itself, have roller-bearing crankshafts for long life and will start at temperatures of up to 30 degrees C below zero. Tatra vehicles come as standard with differential lock capability on all axles, and the ability to disengage front axle drive on the move when making the transition from loose to metalled surfaces. In the interests of on-highway fuel economy, a manual 14 speed gearbox with syncromesh is normally fitted, though an automatic transmission is planned to be made available as an option. Combined with the Tatra designed independent suspension based around individual swing arms and a mix of torsion bars, heavy-duty air diaphragms and optional helper leaf springs, this becomes a combination that is capable of off-road speeds of 75 Kph, and which on asphalt has been tested for stability at over 140 Kph.. Prices for the Tatra range commence at circa £70,000 ex VAT, for the entry level Jamal 6 x 6 SKR 38 tonne GVW tipper, dependant on customer specified options.
